  5. Nancy, We met at my book club meeting last January when you came and spoke about The Scent of Rain and Lightning. I was hoping to find out when your next non-series book will be coming out. Since being introduced to your books I have been sticking in your books between the "required" ones for meetings. I have read all of the Jenny Cain series. If you remember, I brought all of them to the meeting and asked you to sign them. I have also began reading the Eugenia Potter series. I am on the second book that was written by Virginia Rich. I am looking forward to reading the next one and then the 2 last ones that you wrote solo. I hope you are well and I appreciate your contributions to mysteries. Sincerely, Tina Kennedy

  9. Hi Nancy, I have just finished reading "The Scent of Rain and Lightning", what a wonderful story!! As a small town Kansas girl I really enjoyed the setting, and I have been to the Monument Rocks you featured in the story, they are breathtaking. This is the first book of yours that I have read and am planning to pick up "The Virgin of Small Plains" and read that one too! Thanks for such an enjoyable read.

  10. Dear Ms. Pickard, I just completed reading "The Whole Truth" and wanted you to know I lived in Olathe, Ks from l964 to l999 when we retired and moved to Lake of the Ozarks,Mo. My husband, Larry, taught and was coach and Principal of the Kansas School for the Deaf. I taught American History in the Olathe School District for 27 years. We lived on Grace Terrace off of South Stevenson for 20 of those 35 yrs. Our son and family live in Prairie Villege, Ks and our daughter and family live in Mission Hills. I served nine years on the Johnson County Sheriff's Civil Service board under the wonderful leadership of Sheriff Fred Allenbrand who was also a dear friend. There were several horrible murders take place in Olathe during the years I lived there and by mere circumstances I knew either the victims or the murderers. I so much enjoyed your book and look forward to reading many, many more. Perhaps you will have a book signing at Barnes and Noble at Town Center some day and I can meet you. So happens my daughter's mother in law works there. Small world isn't it. Stephany Beaver

  16. Hi Nancy--I'm re-reading "Scent" in preparation for our discussion tomorrow night & it's as good as it was when I first read it. My cousin in Los Altos, CA, raved about it & I expect everyone in the group will, too (& if they don't like it, I'll banish them!) Three of us are taking a Kansas road trip on Thursday & unfortunately, Monument Rocks are a bit farther west than we have time for. Maybe next year. And here's the question I know I'll be asked tomorrow night--any idea when the SEK book will be finished?

  17. I am attending a book discussion of your book "The Scent of Rain and Lightning" tonight. It has an intriguing plot. I understand about the sense of loss being different for individual family members from personal experience. The story delves into the past life of this family which can often be a dangerous place to go, let sleeping dogs lay.

  18. Note from Nancy: I often get asked about Jenny Cain, Marie Lightfoot, and Eugenia Potter. I will never say never to doing books about any of them, but right now I'm focusing solely on my "Kansas" novels. But if any of them called to me and said they have a story I just have to tell, then you can bet I will do it. Thank you very much for asking about them. It makes me--and them--happy to know they're not forgotten just because I'm writing other things.

  19. Hi, everybody, Nancy here. . . Thank you so much for your kind words about my books! I have to confess that I get so busy with my facebook page that I forget to come over here and check for questions and just to say thank you. I'm going to do better about that from now on. I'll check in here regularly to see if there are questions that need answering and to express my appreciation--which is HUGE. First off--for those of you who ask about reader's questions for your book clubs, yes there are questions for THE VIRGIN OF SMALL PLAINS and for THE SCENT OF RAIN AND LIGHTNING, but they're in the back of the paperback versions only. Here's a good link the the questions for SCENT: http://www.princetonbookreview.com/book_pages/discussion/scent-of-rain-and-lightning.php And here's a link for the questions for VIRGIN: http://www.skyways.org/orgs/kcfb/vp/discussion_questions.htm I'll be back to answer you other questions in another comment. Thanks for being here! Love, Nancy

  36. Just finished The Scent of Rain & Lightning. Began yesterday morning (on Kindle). It was magnificent. Loved the flashbacks. Figured out erly that Billy Crosby was not the killer (except for Red). Thought it was Chase for a while, then infatuated Bobby. Loved the character development of Jody -- and Annabelle & Hugh. Yea, romantic me, loved the end with Collin. Whole book made me teary at times. On to The Virgin.... Geoff

  38. Nancy, I just ordered your book from your neighborhood bookstore. I'm sure they will be calling you to sign it. We are all fine - just chugging along, trying in vain to get to our lists. No chance of ever getting it complete. Our little neighborhood has blossomed since you have been here. Four restaurants - and really good ones - have opened in one block, close to our house. Are you working on any new books? Take care. Bill

  42. Hi Nancy, I was delighted to see that you are the keynote speaker at the KS Authors Convention in early October. Seems a long time since we served on the Manhattan Mystery Conclave planning committee together. I seldom get to attend the KS Authors Convention, as it usually falls on a K-State game day. Not so this year! Loved your last two books set in the Flint Hills. Nice to let the rest of the world know about the special place we live in. Looking forward to seeing you in October. 45. I graduated from Larned High in 1964 and FHKSU in 1969 and being from Kansas thought when I found The Scent of Rain and Lighting while searching for mysteries on the internet I would give it a try. It is by far the best mystery novel I have read and as an avid reader I have read hundreds. I plan on buying The Virgin of Small Plains this weekend and will then start on the series. 49. I didn't think I could enjoy a character more than Jenny Cain - until I met Marie Lightfoot. Being stubborn (why should I invest my time getting to know a character who is only going to be in one book?) and prejudice (what's Kansas got to offer that West Michigan can't top?) I haven't read your latest. Maybe I'll have to break down because I love your style and word pictures. Meanwhile, any chance you'll bring back my heroines?

I also rec'd it to a friend after I'd finished it. We both agree it's the best book ever written. My friend immediately purchased The Scent of Rain and Lightning from Amazon after finishing The Virgin of Small Plains, and I ordered two signed copies from I Love A Mystery bookstore (one for me, and one for a giveaway on my blog). I have to tell you that even after growing up with stories in the 1970s Alfred Hitchcock anthologies that scared me silly, your short story, "Dark Chocolate" in the "Two of the Deadliest" anthology haunted me for days!
